Since the advent of the Google Penguin update, it has become very apparent that a lot of websites which have been undertaking Monthly Link Building since before April 2012 will likely have a lot of backlinks which may be seen as spammy links, but at the time were something which a lot of websites did to quickly get their websites ranking.
Likewise, where as using exact match anchor text was at the time, the way to get the most out of your link building efforts to get your website ranking for the keywords you wished to rank for. It is now all the more important to ensure that your link profile contains a mixture anchor text consisting of your brand and url. Of course you still need to build exact match links, but these need to be mixed up more too, making sure you use partial match anchor text in the mix.
The idea being that you need to ensure that your anchor text within your link profile has a diverse range of anchor text and isn’t too overly engineered. You see there were eight different keywords they’d been using for link building and using Majestic SEO to check their link profile. That showed me that almost on the dot, the keywords accounted for almost exactly 12.5% each for each keyword (total 100%). In the grand scheme of things, the website owner or the SEO company, whoever was responsible, had turned an attempt to make things look natural with a mixture of brand, url and keyword anchor text into something that resembled a mathematics project.
